There is no single “ideal” weight — healthy bodies come in many shapes. This calculator shows the healthy weight range for your height based on BMI, alongside four formulas doctors have long used to estimate ideal body weight, for example when dosing medicines.
Formula
Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
Robinson, Miller and Hamwi use the same structure with different constants. The healthy range is the weight that gives a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 at your height.
Worked example
A man who is 175 cm (about 68.9 in, or 8.9 in over 5 ft) has a Devine ideal weight of 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 ≈ 70.5 kg. His BMI-based healthy range is about 56.7–76.3 kg.
Frequently asked questions
Which ideal weight formula is best?
None is definitive. They were designed decades ago for clinical use and give similar answers for average heights. The BMI range is a broader, more practical guide.
Does muscle affect ideal weight?
Yes. These formulas use only height and sex, so muscular people may be perfectly healthy above the estimates.
