Work out how many bricks to order for a garden wall, an extension or a veneer. Choose the brick size, enter the wall dimensions and subtract openings for doors and windows.
The calculation includes a standard mortar joint — 3/8 inch for US bricks and 10 mm for metric bricks — so each brick covers slightly more than its own face.
Formula
Bricks = (Wall area − Openings) ÷ ((Brick length + Joint) × (Brick height + Joint)) × Skins
US modular bricks work out at about 6.86 per ft². UK standard bricks need about 59 per m² — often rounded to 60 — for a single-skin wall.
Worked example
A 20 ft × 8 ft single-skin wall in modular brick: 160 ft² × 6.86 ≈ 1,098 bricks, or 1,152 with 5% extra.
